What is Botox?

In the recent years, we have heard a lot about Botox, which is generally used to treat wrinkles or face lift.

Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox Cosmetic) is a protein complex produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which contains the same toxin that causes food poisoning. Originally botox was formulated to treat muscle spasms that were caused from diseases such as multiple sclerosis and was later introduced as a cosmetic injection.

When used in a medical setting as an injectable form of sterile, purified botulinum toxin, small doses block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine by nerve cells that signal muscle contraction. So when injected into the muscle groups that control the movement of the skin and cause wrinkles, such as botox for eyes, the appearance of crows feet and under eye wrinkles relax giving the eyes a younger look.

When Botox is injected into our muscles, the chemical that controls our muscle contraction will be blocked. Which means, when you frown or laugh, your face will not show much expression, that explains why some of the celebrities’ face always looks stiff on the papers.

Alternative to Botox? Check out our frownies. :D
